New research suggests that the sounds coming from your stomach may reveal much more than whether you are hungry. Scientists have developed a simple, non-invasive method for studying how people perceive signals from their digestive system, offering new insights into the connection between the gut, the brain, and emotional well-being.
The study, published in Scientific Reports, was led by researchers at University College London. It introduces a novel way to measure gastrointestinal interoception—the brain’s ability to detect and interpret signals originating from the digestive system.
The Body’s “Sixth Sense”
Interoception is often described as a sixth sense because it allows people to perceive internal bodily signals such as hunger, thirst, pain, nausea, and even many emotions.
People vary considerably in how accurately they detect these internal cues.
According to researchers, unusually heightened interoception may contribute to anxiety and panic attacks, while reduced awareness may make people more likely to overeat, become dehydrated, or ignore signs of illness or injury.
Until now, studying gastrointestinal interoception often required invasive procedures, including inflating small balloons inside the digestive tract to stimulate internal sensations.
Listening to the Stomach
The new approach replaces these uncomfortable techniques with a digital stethoscope.
The study involved 45 healthy adults who arrived at the laboratory after fasting for three hours.
Researchers placed a digital stethoscope on each participant’s abdomen to continuously record the natural sounds produced during digestion, known medically as borborygmi.
Participants then listened to pairs of 15-second audio recordings through headphones.
One recording was a live feed from their stomach, while the other had been recorded only a few minutes earlier.
Their task was to identify which recording reflected their stomach’s activity in real time and rate how confident they felt about their decision.
Does Fullness Affect Gut Awareness?
The experiment was repeated under three different digestive conditions.
Participants completed the listening task while fasting, after drinking sparkling water, and after consuming a high-protein meal-replacement shake.
These different conditions allowed researchers to examine whether awareness of internal digestive signals changes depending on stomach activity and fullness.
Overall, participants correctly identified the live recording approximately 56% to 60% of the time—only modestly above chance.
The researchers were not surprised by this result, noting that distinguishing between two very similar internal sound recordings is an unusually difficult task.
Some People Are Naturally More Tuned In
Although average performance remained relatively modest, the differences between individuals proved especially informative.
Approximately one in five participants performed significantly better than chance while fasting.
That proportion increased to roughly one in four after drinking sparkling water or consuming the meal-replacement shake.
Some participants also showed a strong correspondence between their confidence and their actual accuracy, suggesting they had a better awareness of when they were correctly identifying their own stomach activity.
The findings indicate that gastrointestinal interoception varies substantially from person to person and may also fluctuate depending on the body’s current physiological state.
These differences could influence how people experience hunger, digestive discomfort, and even emotional states.
Why It Matters for Mental Health
The researchers believe the new test could become a useful research tool for studying conditions such as eating disorders, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), anxiety, and depression.
Many of these disorders involve altered perception of digestive sensations or a close relationship between gastrointestinal symptoms and emotional well-being.
More accurate measurements of gastrointestinal interoception may help scientists better understand why digestive disorders and mental health conditions so often occur together.
They also hope the technique could eventually support therapies that help people interpret their body’s internal signals more accurately, potentially benefiting both physical and psychological health.
Learning What a Stomach Growl Means
The researchers also note that people’s interpretation of bodily sensations is shaped not only by biology but also by experience.
During childhood, parents and caregivers often help children connect stomach sensations with concepts such as hunger, nervousness, excitement, or illness.
Without this guidance, individuals may develop more personal or inconsistent interpretations of internal bodily signals.
As a result, the meaning people assign to a stomach growl may be influenced by social learning as much as by the physical sensation itself.
A Simple Tool With Broad Potential
One of the major strengths of the new method is its simplicity.
Because it relies only on a digital stethoscope, headphones, and computer software, the technique is inexpensive, non-invasive, and open-source, making it accessible to research laboratories around the world.
The authors believe this approach could accelerate research into the gut-brain connection by replacing uncomfortable procedures with a straightforward listening task.
Although additional studies involving larger and more diverse populations will be needed, the findings add to growing evidence that the digestive system and brain remain in constant communication. Understanding how people perceive these internal signals may ultimately improve research into both digestive disorders and mental health.
