Wartime Sugar Rationing Reveals a Striking Link Between Early Diet and Cancer Risk

In early 1940, as German attacks threatened British supply lines, the United Kingdom turned to strict food rationing to avert mass hunger. Sugar was among the most tightly controlled staples, with households forced to sharply curb consumption for more than a decade.

That emergency policy, introduced to keep a country alive during World War II, is now offering researchers an extraordinary natural experiment. New evidence suggests that babies exposed to low sugar intake in their first 1,000 days of life went on to experience markedly lower cancer risks as adults.

New study links sugar and cancer

In a recent paper published in the journal PNAS, economists Chen Zhu of China Agricultural University and Weilong Zhang of the University of Cambridge examined health records from 64,761 people in the UK Biobank. All were born between 1951 and 1956, a period that straddled the end of sugar rationing.

Sugar controls in Britain were lifted suddenly in September 1953, and average sugar consumption soon doubled. By comparing people whose time from conception to age two occurred mostly under rationing with those born after, the team could assess how early-life sugar exposure might shape long-term health.

The researchers also compared babies who spent more of that critical 1,000-day window under rationing with those who caught only its final months. This design mimicked the structure of a policy experiment, allowing the authors to argue that shifts in sugar availability, rather than individual choice, drove the differences.

Dramatically lower cancer incidence

The results were striking. Adults who had been fully exposed to sugar rationing during their first 1,000 days were 69 percent less likely to develop liver cancer than peers born just after controls ended. Significant reductions also appeared for several other major cancers.

Prostate cancer incidence was 52 percent lower in the rationed cohort, lung cancer 41 percent lower, rectal cancer 40 percent lower and breast cancer 36 percent lower. While the study cannot pinpoint precise biological pathways, the authors argue that reduced early sugar intake likely altered both metabolism and lifetime dietary habits.

These findings build on earlier research that had used the same historical episode to examine long-term health. Previous work suggested that wartime babies had lower risks of chronic disease, better cardiovascular health and even reduced chances of developing Alzheimer’s disease later in life.

Slower biological ageing signals

Beyond cancer rates, the new study also looked at telomeres, the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes that tend to shorten as we age. Longer telomeres are generally associated with healthier ageing and lower disease risk.

On average, participants who spent their first 1,000 days under sugar rationing had longer telomeres than those born after the policy ended. According to the researchers, the difference corresponded to about 2.2 years less biological ageing, suggesting that their bodies aged more slowly across the lifespan.

Although telomere length is influenced by many genetic and environmental factors, the authors see this as additional evidence that early-life nutrition leaves a deep, measurable imprint on health trajectories.

Persistent diet habits decades later

The team also investigated whether rationing shaped long-term behaviour. Using detailed diet and lifestyle questionnaires collected by the UK Biobank, they found that wartime babies maintained different eating patterns well into older adulthood.

Those exposed to sugar rationing tended to consume less sugar overall, eat smaller quantities of food and follow more diverse and generally healthier diets, even five decades after the controls ended. This suggests that the nutritional environment in infancy can anchor taste preferences for life.

Weilong Zhang wrote in The Conversation that two mechanisms likely work together: biological programming of metabolism, organs and the immune system, and behavioural conditioning of taste. Early exposure to lower sweetness, he argued, seems to reduce desire for highly sugary foods later on.

Implications for today’s sugar debate

The authors stress that their research is observational, relying on a historical policy shift rather than a controlled clinical trial. However, they contend that the sudden, nationwide end of rationing created quasi-experimental conditions that support a causal link between early sugar intake and adult cancer risk.

The wartime babies, they note, were effectively limited to sugar levels similar to those currently recommended by the World Health Organization. WHO advises that free sugars should make up less than 10 percent of daily energy intake, with a further reduction to below 5 percent offering additional benefits.

In contrast, modern diets in many high-income countries routinely exceed these thresholds, especially among children exposed early to sweetened drinks and ultra-processed foods. The UK wartime experience offers a rare window into what happens when an entire population grows up with much less sugar.

Public health experts say the study reinforces longstanding concerns about high sugar intake, even if sugar’s relationship with cancer is complex and intertwined with obesity, insulin resistance and inflammation. They argue that policies targeting marketing to children, taxation on sugary drinks and reformulation of processed foods may help nudge diets closer to the healthier patterns seen in the rationed cohort.

For now, the authors are cautious but clear. In a country forced by war to drastically cut sugar, an unintended experiment unfolded across an entire generation. Decades later, those strict limits appear to have paid an unexpected dividend in the form of fewer cancers, slower biological ageing and more resilient eating habits that persisted long after peace returned.
